Apparently the winningest player in World Series of Poker history needs some special help.

Just days into the 2017 summer poker festival, 14-time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth stepped outside of the Rio casino and into the parking lot in order to appease the poker gods. He offered them up a sacrifice—a pair of relatively new gold-colored sneakers.

“I’m not superstitious, but just in case…I’ve lost every day since I’ve come to Vegas,” Hellmuth said to onlookers that included Daniel Negreanu and Tony G. “They’re brand new shoes. I called my dad, he said ‘burn them.’ I called my mom, ‘burn them.’ My spiritual guru said ‘burn them.’”

“I’m trying to get rid of the spirits.”

Hellmuth has only cashed in four tournaments so far this year, but that does include a win in a $1,100 event at the L.A. Poker Classic in February for $25,000. Hellmuth bubbled the final table of the $111,111 One Drop High Roller on June 4.

Negreanu captured the shoe-burning incident on his popular YouTube vlog.
