Massive Boston-Area Poker Room To Open For Business June 24, 2019

Wynn Boston Harbor is going to be gigantic, and so will its poker room.

The $2.4 billion casino, expected to be equipped with some 90 poker tables, now has an official opening date: 8 p.m. on June 24, 2019. That’s according to a report from The Boston Globe.

The opening will continue a trend of poker growing across the U.S., especially in the Northeast, while declining in Las Vegas, once the undisputed poker capital in America.

Construction of the casino, which sits in the nearby town of Everett, is on schedule. Wynn is spending $30 million to clean up the heavily contaminated land and adjacent river that was ravaged by Monsanto Chemical.

The casino price tag was bumped up from $2.1 billion to $2.4 billion earlier this year.

It appears to be smooth sailing going forward for the project that faced serious opposition in its early days of development. Wynn was awarded a license for the casino in late 2014, but the project was challenged by the cities of Boston and Somerville. Both had preferred competing casino projects. Those roadblocks were cleared and construction was green lit last year.

At one point, Massachusetts officials thought Wynn’s design for the casino was lackluster, and so the casino giant revamped its plans to make the casino look like its flagship properties in Las Vegas. Wynn has about 30 poker tables in Las Vegas.

“This is a vast improvement over the design before,” Steve Crosby, the state’s top gaming regulator said in 2015. “It will be incredibly visible…something exciting and to be proud of.”
